Here you will find a short description of the different media projects I have been involved in.

Designing Physical Modeling based Musical Instruments with the Wiimote

This project has been directed towards developing a general purpose Physical Modelling based musical instrument, which allow for creative and exploratory use.  The project dives into the anatomy of digital musical instruments and investigates interaction design for such instruments. In order to direct our instrument design we analyzed the intended user (experimental electronic musicians) of our PhM based instrument and the activity (compositional phase of an experimental electronic musician) in which the instrument is to be a part of. Three digital instrument prototypes were developed - all based on the Nintendo WiiMote - in order to experiment with different mapping schemes in relation to exploratory use of PhM synthesis.

Bridging the gap between the area of Music Information Retrieval and the common musician

The applications of MIR (Music Information Retrieval) are wide and ever growing, but there is a tendency to focus on the practical; making it easier for the consumer to search for new music, allowing the computer to automate the analysis process, helping companies in gathering useful information about its costumers, etc. On the other hand MIR haven’t really been applied to the realm of Human Computer Music Interaction (HCMI). This project proposes a system that encompasses the augmentation of an entire band, ranging from percussionists to string-players by providing a live stream of meaningful symbolic information from each instrument.

Towards a more intuitive mixing process

This project proposes an alternate mixing console based on a tangible user interface, which is designed for a more intuitive interaction during the process of mixing music. The interface makes use of a stage metaphor (representing physical space, such as a studio or a live stage) thereby allowing for easy control of sound sources. The stage has a listening point and panning of every channel present in the stage is determined by its position relative to the position of the listening point

A collaborative compositional tool

for electronic musicians

This project investigates collaboration in electronic music composition. Such composition is mostly situated around computers, being the center unit of most digital audio workstations. These are however, dominantly single user interfaces, which implies certain limitations in regards to collaboration. A multi-touch interface, resembling that of traditional audio editing software, was created, that allowed collaborators to compose music together.

Let's get physical

This project investigates gaming and physical activity in learning environments. It seems that when going through the process of designing interactive computer based learning systems there is a tendency that developers restrict themselves to a computer. What kind of advantages could be connected with moving the game away from the computer and into a system that is based on motion tracking and thereby physical engagement? The system was developed and tested in close colaboration with a 5th grade at Tove Ditlevsen Skole, Vesterbro, Copenhagen.
